Welcome to Mealsndrinks. Today we are going to prepare Kerala special Meen Pollichathu fish fry. There is a fish variety popularly known as “Green Chromide” (Pearl Spot Fish)i.e “Karimeen Pollichathu”. Kerala Meen Pollichathu is being prepared by wrapping up the fish in banana leaf that is further cooked with coconut oil, spicy masala, and Indian sauces.
You may use Pomfret, Red Snapper, or Mackerel in-place of Pearl Spot fish. The Fish must be fresher and cleaned and cut by the Fishmonger. You must ensure that from the Fishmonger to do Gutting and removing Fins.
What is Green Chromide or Meen Pollichathu ?
The Green Chromide which is also famous with the name Meen Pollichathu and Pearl Spot fish, found in southern India and Sri Lanka. In India, Kerala it is also known as “karimeen” whereas in Sri Lanka known as “koraliya” and in Goa “known as “kalundar”.
How to make Meen Pollichathu ?
This special fry fish is very popular in Kerala. The fish is rarely found and rich in high protein and nutrients.
- Clean and wash the fish. Make a deep cut which will help in marinating.
- Marinate it with turmeric, lemon juice, red chili powder, and salt. Leave it for 1 hour.
- Take a non-stick pan to saute all the veggies, i.e chopped onions, ginger, garlic, curry leaves, and green chilies for a few minutes. Do not overcook.
- After that, add all spices and saute it. Do not overcook.
- Heat oil in pan now fry the fish by flipping both sides. Do not overcook.
- Place the loaf of banana on the plate, Add the sauteed veggies of onions to the bottom, then add fried fish now do toppings by the gravy of spices and cover it with banana leaves. Use a toothpick to hold the leaves.
- Now, these banana leaf boxes can steamed in steamer like idli. Turn the flame off when it is cooked.
- Serve Meen Pollichathu with lime wedges and steamed rice.

Description
Kerala Meen Pollichathu a type of Non-Veg dish which is famous all over Kerala. A special variety of fish is used in it like Pomfret, Red Snapper, or Mackerel and Pearl Spot fish. It is being prepared in coconut oil and covered with banana leaves. generally, it is steamed like Idli.
Ingredients
For Frying Fish
- 4 Slices of fish
- 1 tbsp Salt
- 1 tbsp chili Powder
- ½ tbsp Turmeric Powder
For the Masala
- 2 Onions Finely Chopped
- 2 Tomatoes Chopped
- 3 Fresh Curry Leaves
- 1 tbsp Coconut Oil
- 1-inch piece Ginger
- 1 tbsp Chili Powder
- 1 tbsp Turmeric Powder
- 2 tbsp Coconut Powder
- 2 tbsp Coriander Powder
- ½ tbsp Salt

- Lemon Wedges
- Banana Leaf
Instructions
